US expects to increase its presence in Biospain 2016

The organisers have confirmed the attendance of 17 countries and expect use of commercial space to increase by 40% over the 2014 edition

Madrid, 19 July 2016. The eighth edition of the International Biotechnology Meeting, Biospain 2016 organised by the Spanish Bioindustry Association (ASEBIO) and SPRI, the Basque Business Development Agency, a part of the Basque Government, will take place at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC),Barakaldo, between the 28 and 30 of September with an increased presence of US businesses and organisations. Growing interest since the BIO Convention fair, San Francisco, from the 6 to the 9 of June, and the competitiveness shown by Spanish biotechnology at a global level over the last year, have motivated greater participation from the US at this biannual event for the exchange of knowledge, ideas and experiences among all the actors in the biotechnology sector.

“At the international fairs that we have visited recently we have perceived that there is greater interest from international investors and clusters of companies in coming to find out about projects in Spain and bringing companies  here from abroad, mainly from the US, Europe and Latin America,” commented Jordi Martí, president of ASEBIO, during the presentation of the event in Madrid. As explained in the 2015 ASEBIO Report, recently announced operations involving large pharmaceuticals and specialised international investment funds reflect that Spanish biotechs are matching their international counterparts in terms of scientific developments. The total number of subsidiaries abroad currently stands at 141, the US hosts the largest number with 21 ASEBIO members operating in its market.

As of today, 17 countries have confirmed their presence at Biospain 2016 and the participation of autonomous community pavilions has increased, with Galicia, the Basque Country, Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic islands having one. The organisers also expect the commercial fair to be 40% bigger this year in terms of surface area. The space for the partnering event, meanwhile, will remain similar to the previous year, although the number of meetings is expected to surpass the 3,300 that took place in Santiago de Compostela during Biospain 2014.

“Hosting an event like Biospain on home soil allows us to present and position our activities in this industry on the international stage, providing for the commercial, investment, academic and information needs of the sector,” said the General Director of SPRI, the Basque Business Development Agency, Department of Economic Development and Competitiveness of the Basque Government, Alexander Arriola, who pointed out that this will be the second time the event takes place in the Basque Country: “It reaffirms Euskadi as a leader in knowledge and technology intensive initiatives, as well as recognising the commitment of the Basque Government to life sciences, a commitment which started in 2000 with a determined push to adapt the Basque economy to an increasingly changing and competitive world”.

On this edition of Biospain the capabilities of Euskadi in biosciences will be on display at a pavilion for the bioregion, with the presence of around thirty entities, companies, technology centres and incubators, which will also have a prominent place in the programme of the event with over 20 scientific and business presentations.

New for Biospain 2016

This year the organisers have scheduled a Patient Forum focused on rare diseases, developments in multiple sclerosis and the role of patient associations, which will take place on Wednesday 28 September. On Friday 30 the Pharma Biotech Forum will also take place. Dr Francisco J.M. Mojica, a prestigious speaker and tenured Professor of Microbiology at the University of Alicante is already confirmed for Biospain. Mojica was the first researcher to characterise and coin the term CRISPR Technology, carrying out the first experiments into this gene editing technique with multiple biotechnology applications.

Third edition of the Training and Employment Forum

The Biospain Organisational Committee has also reached a collaboration agreement with FEBiotec for the diffusion activities of the third edition of the Training and Employment Forum, collaborating through the dissemination of information for the event among its general membership and affiliated associations. The forum will go beyond showcasing training opportunities for the sector by making use of a system of scheduled interviews that will connect employers offering jobs and job hunters seeking new opportunities. There will also be a programme on career opportunities, in-demand profiles, and key factors when job hunting.

Biospain Investment Forum

The Biospain Investment Forum will have the support of the Spanish Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (ASCRI) in the organisation of the event, which aims to attract both national and international investors. The collaboration will be focused around organising a specific parallel programme and social events for the investment community. 70% of the commercial fair space is already allocated. Some of the most stand-out subject areas include: a patient forum on rare diseases, multiple sclerosis and the increasingly bigger role played by patient organisations; new diagnostics methods; vaccines; Alzheimer's; food and health; public policies for open innovation; nanobiotechnology; big data; new oncology therapies, and bioeconomy.

From the 28th to the 30th of September 2016 the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC) in Barakaldo (Bilbao, Basque Country) will be the stage for BioSpain 2016, a forum for all the actors in the biotechnology sector to share knowledge, ideas and experiences. The event has become the main international platform for the showcasing of Spanish biotechnology and to provide answers for the commercial, academic and information needs of the sector.

BioSpain is made up of a commercial fair, a partnering event, an investment forum, a training and employment forum, conferences on a range of issues (with parallel sessions) attended by national and international speakers and a scientific conference which is organised by scientific societies. The event has now become the biggest country-based fair in Europe and the fifth biggest in the world in terms of the number of business development meetings.

The BEC has 150,000 m2 of space for commercial exhibitions distributed in six pavilions, 18.000m2 for conventions, several exhibition rooms, vestibules, a restaurant, cafe, car parking and other facilities - providing the perfect venue for an event like BioSpain.

Biospain is today the 5th largest partnering in biotechnology in the world, with 3.327 one-to-one meetings, +320% more meetings than the first time the partneringONE® system (EBD Group) was introduced in 2008.

Following the success of previous editions, Biospain 2014 hosted 200 exhibitors, more than 850 companies and institutions and over 1.850 delegates from 37 countries. One-to-one business meetings rose to 3.327 (+20%).

Official sponsors of Biospain are Bioibérica, Merck, Pharmamar y Celgene.
