Bilbao will host BioSpain 2016

The 8th edition of the biotechnology fair, the biggest country-based event in Europe, will take place in September 2016

Madrid/Bilbao, 6 March 2015. The Spanish Bioindustry Association (ASEBIO) and SPRI (the Basque Business Development Agency), part of the Basque Government Department of Economic Development and Competitiveness, have signed an agreement for the city of Bilbao to host the 8th edition of BioSpain, a biannual event. The event will be officially announced next week at the BioEurope Spring fair which will take place in Paris from the 9th to the 11th of March.

From the 28th to the 30th of September 2016 the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC) in Barakaldo will be the stage for BioSpain, a forum for all the actors in the biotechnology sector to share knowledge, ideas and experiences. The event has become the main international platform for the showcasing of Spanish biotechnology and to provide answers for the commercial, academic and information needs of the sector.

BioSpain is made up of a commercial fair, a partnering event, an investment forum, a training and employment forum, conferences on a range of issues (with parallel sessions) attended by national and international speakers and a scientific conference which is organised by scientific societies. The event has now become the biggest country-based fair in Europe and the fifth biggest in the world in terms of the number of business development meetings.

The BEC has 150,000 m2 of space for commercial exhibitions distributed in six pavilions, 18.000m2 for conventions, several exhibition rooms, vestibules, a restaurant, cafe, car parking and other facilities - providing the perfect venue for an event like BioSpain.

Alex Arriola, Director General at SPRI believes that "Euskadi (the Basque Country) is consolidating itself as a pioneer for intensive initiatives in knowledge and technology, as is shown by the fact that Euskadi is for the second time hosting BioSpain 2016, the biggest biotechnology fair in the country, and it will also be hosting Imaginenano 2015, the biggest nanotechnology event, for the third consecutive time.

Regina Revilla, president of ASEBIO, underlines that “our experience in Euskadi with BioSpain 2012, an event at which then-HRH Prince Felipe was present, was exceptional because of the high attendance numbers, the excellent facilities at our disposal and the involvement of a local government which is highly committed to R&D.”
